Storm player wins second championship in less than four months
November 17, 2003 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Tampa Bay Storm News Release
TAMPA, FL -- For the second time in less than four months, Kelvin Kinney hoisted a championship trophy on Sunday. A member of the Canadian Football League's Edmonton Eskimos, Kinney and his team defeated the Montreal Alouettes, 34-22, to win the CFL's Grey Cup.
The championship was Kinney's second this year. In June Kinney won his first ArenaBowl ring as a member of the Tampa Bay Storm.
Kinney was a presence on the defensive side of the ball in both championship games. In the ArenaBowl against the Arizona Rattlers, Kinney scooped up a fumble by Arizona quarterback Sherdrick Bonner and returned it 26 yards to put the Storm on top 20-10 in the second quarter.
On Sunday against Montreal, Kinney put the dagger in the Alouettes' heart, sacking quarterback Anthony Calvillo on fourth down to give the ball back to the Edmonton offense with less than a minute left in the game, effectively giving the Eskimos the championship.
In 11 regular season games for Edmonton this season Kinney had eight sacks. He began the CFL season with the Toronto Argonauts before joining Edmonton misway through the season.
The CFL championship game was the third consecutive championship game in which Kinney has played. Kinney was also with Edmonton last season when the Eskimos fell to Montreal in the CFL championship game. He went on to win the ArenaBowl with the Storm and capped the year off Sunday with the Grey Cup victory.
Kinney and the Storm begin defense of their 2003 ArenaBowl championship on Sunday, February 8, when they host the Orlando Predators at 3:00 pm in the St. Pete Times Forum. Season tickets for the 2004 season are on sale now by calling (813) 301-6600. Tickets may also be purchased in person at the St. Pete Times Forum Box Office or online at www.tampabaystorm.com.
