Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs got off to a great start to the 2012 Florida State League season, opening at home with an 8-6 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle.
Starter Grayson Garvin, making his first professional start, went three hard-fought innings and gave up three runs, but it was the bats that allowed Charlotte to take over.
The Charlotte lineup jumped all over the Miracle's pitching staff. Stone Crabs first baseman Phil Wunderlich led the charge with three hits while shortstop Derek Dietrich collected three RBI's.
Minnesota Twins right-hander Scott Baker did not last very long in his rehab start. Recovering from elbow tendonitis, Baker departed with an apparent injury after recording just one out. That required the Miracle bullpen to go the rest of the way.
After Garvin surrendered a run in the top of the first inning, Charlotte got the bats going. Ty Morrison led off the home half of the first with a single, and Hector Guevara followed with a ground rule double. Dietrich popped up, at which point Baker left the game. Edgar Ibarra relieved Baker, allowing a sacrifice fly to Mikie Mahtook and an RBI single by Wunderlich before ending the inning without more damage.
The Miracle picked up two more runs in the top of the second on a two-run single by Daniel Santana and held on by that margin for a few innings. Jose Gonzalez (0-1) entered the game in the fourth inning, giving the Stone Crabs offense new life.
Gonzalez plunked Kevin Kiermaier and Guevara hit an infield single before a double steal put them both in scoring position. Dietrich tied the game with a deep double to right field, and Mahtook followed with a double of his own to take the lead for good.
George Jensen (1-0) and Jimmy Patterson combined for 4 innings of shutout ball out of the Stone Crabs bullpen, and Chris Rearick shut the door for the 2-inning save despite allowing 3 runs in the 9th inning.
Charlotte tallied eight runs and 15 hits, with each Stone Crabs batter but one picking up at least one safety.
These teams will finish up the three game set with the final two games at Hammond Stadium in Ft. Myers. The next one is tomorrow at 7:05 PM.
