Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
DAYTONA BEACH -- The Daytona Cubs built an early lead, but the Charlotte Stone Crabs did not go quietly in the opening contest of a four-game series on Sunday. However, the opportunistic Cubs made the most of some free passes in order to deal the Stone Crabs a 4-3 loss in walk-off fashion.
Lead-off man John Adreoli proved to be the lucky charm when it came to sparking rallies. Three of Charlotte's six walks were converted into runs by Daytona.
Andreoli walked to open the bottom of the first inning, stole second, and then scored from second on a fielder's choice grounder to third base to break the scoreless tie. Lightning would strike again in the ninth, when Andreoli drew a one-out walk to spark the game-winning rally.
Daytona expanded its lead to 3-0 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning against Charlotte starter C.J. Riefenhauser. The lefty was unable to snap his recent string of tough outings, allowing three runs - two earned - on five hits. He walked four batters over just four innings of work.
Rehabbing Rays outfielder Matt Joyce started in right field and finished 1-for-3 with a walk. Joyce doubled and scored a run in the fifth to pull the Stone Crabs within a run, at 3-2. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique, but suffered a set back when he strained his back on a July 4 rehab stint with the Triple-A Durham Bulls.
Scott Weismann (2-3) was worked over for a two-out run that forced the Cubs to come back up in the bottom of the ninth. Cody Rogers singled, stole second and was balked over to third base. Pinch-hitter Riccio Torrez slapped a single into left to knot the game at 3-3.
Charlotte received an impressive relief outing from righty Alex Koronis, who worked 4-1/3 scoreless innings after Riefenhauser departed. After Koronis retired the first batter in the ninth, Stone Crabs manager Jim Morrison opted to bring closer Chris Rearick into a non-save situation.
Rearick (2-3) uncharacteristically walked Andreoli on four pitches to put the winning run aboard. Charlotte momentarily dodged a bullet when Ronald Torreyes double put runners at second and third, but Rubi Silva followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home the winning run.
Walks have been the Charlotte pitching staff's undoing through the season. With six more on Sunday and 349 through 90 games, the Stone Crabs have issued the most bases on balls of any team in the Florida State League.
The two clubs meet again on Monday as Charlotte seeks to even the series behind left-hander Braulio Lara. He will match up against Daytona lefty Kyler Burke. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
