Stone Crabs Send Six to All-Star Game
June 17, 2016 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
The Charlotte Stone Crabs had six players selected to represent the South division in the Florida State League All-Star Game in Fort Myers on Saturday, June 18, the third-most of any team in the league. First pitch from Hammond Stadium is scheduled for 7:05, following a pre-game Home Run Derby.
Nick Ciuffo, a former first-round pick in 2013, enjoyed a breakout first two months of the year before suffering an injury in early June. Ciuffo hit .289 in the first half, his highest-ever batting average in four years as a pro, but perhaps most impressively, the 21 year-old gunned down 19 of 30 baserunners that attempted to steal against him, by far the best rate in the league.
Cade Gotta was supposed to be the Stone Crabs' fourth outfielder in 2016, but his torrid start to the year rapidly changed plans. Gotta absolutely raked in the first half, hitting .306/.362/.451 and earning himself a call-up to Double-A Montgomery. Gotta legged out nine doubles and seven stolen bases while swatting four homers.
Brent Honeywell was the big-name prospect on Charlotte's roster at the start of the year, and he didn't disappoint, earning his way onto the All-Star roster despite right arm tenderness that's kept him sidelined since early May. Honeywell is 4-0 with a 1.30 ERA, striking out 46 batters in 41.2 IP. He is expected back from injury soon.
Mac James was the backup catcher to Ciuffo going into the season, but he hit so well that All-Star voters had no choice but to include him. James wrapped up the first half with a .270 batting average and 18 RBI.
Brian Miller was selected to the All-Star Game as an alternate, but we'd certainly argue he deserved inclusion from the beginning. The sidewinder has blossomed as the Stone Crabs' closer, saving eight games in nine chances with a 0.71 ERA. Miller has walked just four batters all year while striking out 24 in 25.1 IP.
Riley Unroe has been the stalwart at the top of the Charlotte order, leading off in all 57 games in which he's appeared. A slow June has dropped his numbers somewhat, but Unroe is still hitting a solid .256/.341/.391, leading the team in walks and doubles while ranking second in steals, triples, home runs, and RBI.
