Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE - The Stone Crabs managed just three hits in a 7-0 loss to Lakeland in game one, but a six-run outburst in the fifth inning of the nightcap lifted Charlotte to a 8-3 win as the Stone Crabs and Flying Tigers split a doubleheader on Saturday at Charlotte Sport Park.
Wade Gaynor's three-run homer in the first was all the offense the Flying Tigers would need to soar to victory in the opener. Lakeland would tack on four more as they roughed up Enny Romero (3-4).
Romero, making his first start since July 1, surrendered seven runs - all earned - over 4-1/3 innings. He allowed just four hits, but walked four batters as well.
Steve Tinoco accounted for two of Charlotte's three hits in the game. The other came from rehabbing Rays outfielder Sam Fuld, who finished 1-for-3 and added a diving catch in the first inning of the opening contest.
The Charlotte batters were unable to solve Flying Tigers starter Luis Angel Sanz (6-3). Sanz held the Stone Crabs to just two hits and a pair of walks through his five innings of work. Charlotte did not get a runner past first base in the ballgame.
The Stone Crabs again found themselves trailing to Lakeland in game two, as the Flying Tigers took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth.
Mikie Mahtook and Tinoco opened the frame with back-to-back singles. After a sacrifice and a hit batter loaded the bases for Charlotte, David Wendt delivered a RBI single to tie the game up at three.
Alejandro Torres followed suit with a single of his own to give the Stone Crabs their first lead of the day. After Tyler White (2-2) fell behind Robby Price 2-0, Price unloaded a three-run blast over the wall in right to break the game open with the Stone Crabs up 8-3.
Price was one of three Stone Crabs to turn in a three-hit performance in the nightcap. Mahtook and Tinoco also had three apiece as Charlotte tallied 12 hits in the game.
Tinoco finished the day 5-for-6 with three RBI across both games of the doubleheader.
Victor Mateo (3-3) worked the front five, surrendering three runs - two earned - on four hits to pick up the win.
The Stone Crabs travel to Daytona on Sunday to open up a four-game series against the Daytona Cubs. Left-hander C.J. Riefenhauser will make the start in the opener for Charlotte. First pitch is set for 5:35 p.m.
