Saginaw Sting News Release

Johnstown, PA - The Saginaw Sting traveled through a spring "winter" storm to get to the Cambria County Arena for their second match up this season with the Johnstown Generals. The Sting was coming off an impressive 76-41 win over Eastern Kentucky Drillers and Johnstown was trying to find their winning ways again after a 69-19 drubbing from Northern Kentucky. The Generals battled the Sting to a 19-all tie at intermission. Johnstown struck on its first possession as Slatcoff connected with Terrill Simms from 15 yards out at 11:30. Domonkos made the extra-point and then booted a uno kickoff good for another Generals point. A point is awarded when a team's kick-off goes 60 yards and strikes the net in the middle of the goal posts.

Saginaw needed two passes to get on the board. Kevin Brown's 28-yard reception from quarterback Tommy Jones (21 of 37, 229 yards, four TDs, three interceptions) made it 8-6 just over a minute later. The Sting took a 12-8 first-quarter advantage after Jones' 10-yard scoring pass to LaVaughn Macon.

The Generals got the first of several big plays on defense early in the second quarter. Dequan Young intercepted a Saginaw pass on a first-and-goal play from the 9. Young's 28-yard return put Johnstown at the Sting 22-yard line. Slatcoff's 15-yard touchdown pass to Calvin Stephens and a Domonkos extra-point put the home team up 15-12 with 7:33 on the clock. Once again, Saginaw struck two plays later with Brown's 8-yard touchdown catch and Chris Kolias' kick that gave the Sting a 19-15 lead.

The Generals got as close as the Sting 2, but had to settle for a Domonkos 29-yard field goal and a 22-19 lead. Saginaw followed with Macon's 5-yard touchdown reception and Maurice Manley's 13-yard interception return for a touchdown to lead 33-22 with 2:28 left in the third. Just as the momentum seemed to be against Johnstown, Sesay batted a pass at the line of scrimmage, got under the ball and caught it before running 10 yards to the end zone as the third quarter ended.

The Generals defense stopped two Sting drives in the fourth quarter, but Saginaw had an interception and the key last-minute stand after Slatcoff ran for a first down to the 5. "They stepped up at the end," Robinson said. "We had an opportunity to win the game in the final seconds. They just made the plays and we didn't." The Sting are currently 4-2 and one game behind the Northern Kentucky River Monsters. This upcoming week the Sting will travel to Huntington West Virginia to try to avenge a 38-37 loss to the Huntington Hammer in week three. Kickoff is slated for 7:30.

This Sting's next home game will be Friday April 15, 2011 at the Dow Event Center.
