January 30, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Indiana Ice News Release
It started with Smirnov on ice and finished with a top-shelf shot of Jason Salvaggio. The two Indiana Ice skaters propelled the Ice in a 4-1 victory over Team USA U-17's as recently acquired goaltender Hayden Stewart improved to 3-0-0 with a 1.00 GAA in an Indy sweater.
The Russian forward scored the game's first goal and assisted on Indiana's second lamplighter. Salvaggio potted the matchup's final score on a high, hard one on a penalty shot.
Stewart earned first-star honors after stopping 33 of 34 shots in his third start with Indiana.
"They guys were great in front of me. They cleared any loose pucks," commented the 6'3", 198 lb. netminder. "I had good puck control most of the night and when I left one out there---they cleared them away."
After Smirnov buried a one-timer with 3:55 left in the first period, Noah Hanifin scored USA's only goal of the evening to tie the score at one 7:31 into the second stanza. Smirnov received a scoring pass from Scott Conway and Austin Kosack recorded one of his two assists on the evening.
Smirnov went from goal scorer to assist man as Indy took the lead for good on Dwyer Tschantz's 12th goal of the season. Tschantz received a perfect feed at the goal crease from Smirnov on a two-on-one rush at 10:48 of the second period.
Joshua Jacobs had the last laugh after drawing a five-minute major penalty against the visitors' Brendan Warren. His blue line slap shot gave the hosts a two-goal lead 3:53 into the final period. Kosack had his second helper of the night on Jacob's goal. Patrick Newell was also part of the scoring sequence. Warren was sent to the showers with a game misconduct for the blow to the head.
Salvaggio was dragged down at center ice and awarded a penalty shot 5:19 before the final horn. The forward lifted a shot over the shoulder of the 17's goalie Michael Lackey to finish the scoring.
Indy hits the road for a pair of contests against the Muskegon Lumberjacks (2/1) and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders (2/7) before their next homecoming extravaganza at Scout Night on February 8 from Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The contest against the Chicago Steel is set to begin at 7:05 pm.
