Stevenson Powers Slam to Win and Sweep of Olympia

OLYMPIA, Wash. - The Bellingham Slam rode the hot shooting of Jacob Stevenson as they defeated the Olympia Reign, 125-107, in International Basketball League action at Evergreen State College on Tuesday.
Stevenson scored 32 points on 12-of-17 shooting on the night to help the Slam earn the win as well as a sweep of the season series over Olympia, winning all four games this season after going winless against the Reign in 2010.
The Slam started off the game hot, scoring the first nine points before the Reign steadied themselves and fought back to make the score 28-25 Bellingham after the first quarter.
After Olympia scored the first basket of the second quarter to pull within one point, Bellingham turned things on and used a 13-2 run over a five-minute span to lead 41-29. The Slam carried a 60-48 advantage into halftime.
An energetic third quarter saw the Reign pull within seven, at 65-58, in the middle stages of the quarter before the Slam rallied to double the margin by the end of the frame, at 90-76.
Hot outside shooting kept Olympia in the game in the fourth quarter, as they again got within seven, at 100-93 with 6:29 left. But guard Jacob Stevenson went to work for the Slam, scoring 12 of 15 points during one stretch late in the game to put the game out of reach.
Stevenson led all scorers with 32 points for Bellingham, who finished the road portion of their schedule with a 5-4 record. Forward Lukas Henne also had a strong game for the Slam, posting a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds, to go along with five blocks.
Marcus Whittaker led six Olympia players in double figures with 22 points.
The Slam wrap up the 2011 regular season with a home game on Sunday against the Kankakee Soldiers. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at Whatcom Pavilion.
