Gary Steelheads News Release
GARY, Indiana (April 22, 2007) - The Gary Steelheads fielded a deep, balanced team in their USBL debut, defeating the Jackson Wildcats 114-79 at the Genesis Center Friday night. The Steelheads never trailed in the game.
The Steelheads had no fewer than seven players in double figures, paced by Bethel College rookie Adam Schaper, who fired in 17 points, while grabbing 6 rebounds, blocking a shot and grabbing a steal. He hit 6-of-11 field goals for the game. It is the first time in franchise history, that a player from the private South Bend school has paced the Steelheads in scoring.
But balance was the operative word for Gary in this game, with swingman Robert Griffin scoring 16 points, Ray Cunningham added 14 points, and Jermaine Blackburn and Jamario Moon accounting for 13 points apiece. Louis White hit four of his five shots for 12 points, and Marlowe Currie scored 10 points in the victory. Center Chris Alexander paced the Steelheads rebounders with 8 carums. Dakari Wallace paced the Wildcats with 24 points, while Julius Young grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds for Jackson in defeat.
The most amazing aspect of this game may have been turnovers. Usually, if a team commits over thirty turnovers, they will find victory difficult to achieve. The Steelheads committed 31 turnovers in this game...but still won by 35 points! The answer? Gary forced 33 Jackson turnovers themselves. On the boards, it was all Steelheads, 59-39.
The two teams will meet again at the Genesis Center this evening, with game time scheduled for 7:05PM CDT.
