Gary Steelheads News Release
GARY, Indiana (April 15, 2007) - The Gary Steelheads and the Jackson Wildcats met Saturday night for the second time in 24 hours, and very little changed. The Steelheads won the contest, 117-95, improving their USBL record to 2-0 on the young season.
For the second straight night, Gary broke away early. This time, the Steelheads twirled a shutout for the first 4:47, when Jackson center Lincoln Smith connected on a short jumper. With that basket, Gary had a 9-2 advantage. By the end of the quarter, the Steelheads had built the lead to 28-17.
As was the case opening night on Friday, the Wildcats owned the second quarter and succeeded in cutting the deficit to 51-43 at halftime. The Wildcats pulled even closer early in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 56-54 at 8:23 of the third quarter. Forward Marlowe Currie of the Steelheads missed a 21-footer, but point guard Louis White followed with a rebound and basket in heavy traffic. The Steelheads then scored the next seven, to restore the margin to nine points. Gary gradually increased the lead to insure victory.
The Steelheads were paced by hot-shooting Rob Griffin, who scored 29 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and contributed 3 assists. Again, Gary exhibited incredible balance in scoring with five other players in double figures. Louis White contributed 18 points, as well as 6 assists and 3 steals, while forwards Jamario Moon and Adam Schaper contributed 17 points each. Guard Eddie Barlowe chipped in 13 points, while swingman Ray Cunningham added 12. Jermaine Blackburn paced Steelheads' rebounders with 9.
The Wildcats were lead in scoring by Torrie Bright with 19 points and Michael Sneed with 18. Jermaine Green paced Wildcats rebounders with 12. While the Wildcats took the boards 62-48, poor marksmanship did them in. Jackson shot just .364 shooting from the field, nullifying the rebound advantage. Worse yet, Jackson shot barely over 50 percent from the foul line (.564), while Gary connected at .900 (36-40) from the charity stripe.
