Steelheads Punch Ticket to CBA Finals with 124-92 Win Over Sioux Falls
GARY, Indiana (March 18, 2006) - The Gary Steelheads punched their ticket to the CBA Finals with a 124-92 victory over the Sioux Falls Skyforce Saturday night at the Genesis Center. Gary maximized the victory by earning all seven quarter points. It is the first time in franchise history that the Steelheads have earned a spot in the Finals.
Through two playoff games, the Steelheads have earned 13 quarter points. This total assures Gary of a position in the CBA Finals. The Steelheads are the only undefeated team remaining in the first round of the playoffs.
The Steelheads started quickly against Sioux Falls, winning the first quarter 29-16. Then Gary added back-to-back quarter victories of 32-23, before the Skyforce mounted a comeback. The Steelheads prevailed in a very competitive fourth quarter, 31-30.
The Steelheads placed seven players in double figures, with three of them contributing double-double performances. Forward Randy Holcomb and swingman Robert Griffin paced the attack with 23 points apiece. For Griffin, it was a CBA career high. Guard Brian Chase scored 17 points with 10 assists, while forward Carl Mitchell added 13 points and 13 rebounds and center Chris Alexander tossed in 11 points with 11 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Guard Eric Chatfield scored 12 points and handed out 6 assists, while forward Marlowe Currie chipped in 10 points with 7 rebounds.
The Skyforce struggled from the field, hitting just .420 for the evening. Jermaine Walker paced Sioux Falls with 22 points, while Corey Williams added 20 in defeat. Ellis Myles, playing his first game with the Force, contributed a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Steelheads play their third playoff game against the Idaho Stampede in Boise on Tuesday.
