Steelheads Prevail Against Cagerz, 103-97

GARY, Indiana (May 28, 2007) - The Gary Steelheads made Memorial Day more memorable for Northwest Indiana basketball fans with a 103-97 victory over the Kansas Cagerz at the Genesis Center. It was the first time Gary had defeated the cagey Cagerz in five attempts, and it also ended a three-game losing streak for the home team.

The first three quarters of this game were tightly played, similar to the previous meeting between the two teams on Saturday night. But this time the Steelheads met every Kansas challenge in the fourth quarter. Gary exploded for 35 points, leading by as many as a dozen points down the stretch.

Gary got some huge performances from forward Jamario Moon and guard Louis White. Moon paced all scorers on the floor with 23 points, with White added 20. Center Chris Alexander tossed in 12 points for the winners, while guard Carl Edwards and forward Corey Minnifield each added 9. Merrillville's Lonnie Randolph played 25 minutes, including most of the second half. He scored 8 points and handed out a team-high 5 assists. Kansas was paced by guard Nate Johnson with 17 points and 8 assists.

Shooting proved to be the difference, with the Steelheads hitting at a .500 clip. Gary held Kansas to .387 fro the field. The Cagerz took the boards 44-38, but the committed 19 turnovers against Gary's 15.

With the victory, Gary improved to 11-7 on the season. The Cagerz fell back to 11-7. The Steelheads host the Oklahoma Storm at the Genesis Center on Thursday night. Game time will be 7:00PM CDT at the Genesis Center.
