GARY, Indiana (June 29, 2007) - The Kansas Cagerz have given the Gary Steelheads fits all season long. And Friday night was no exception, as the cagey Cagerz defeated Gary in USBL Festival Tournament play, 100-88.
The Steelheads fell behind in the opening moments, as Kansas went on an early 12-0 run for a 30-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Gary committed a staggering 13 turnovers. By halftime, the Steelheads trailed 51-34.
Guard Louis White paced Gary in first half scoring with 14 points, while forward Corey Minnifield added 11. No other Gary player scored more than four points.
The Steelheads shot .286 from the field for the half, while Kansas countered with .529 field goal shooting. The Cagerz won the battle of the boards, 23-20.
Gary cut the deficit to 71-61 by the end of the third quarter, as White and Minnifield combined for 13 points. But the Steelheads could only get as close as seven points in the fourth quarter, when guard Eddy Barlow hit two free throws at 7:07 remaining. Kansas then re-established the margin and cruised home with the victory.
White paced the Gary attack with 24 points, while Minnifield added 21 points and guard Carl Edwards 19. Edwards also paced all Steelheads with seven rebounds. The Cagerz had four players in double figures, paced by Nate Johnson with 28 points.
Gary shot just .361 from the field for the game, while the Cagerz managed .458 marksmanship. The Steelheads shot an uncharacteristically low .667 from the foul line. Kansas took the boards, 49-46, with 38 points coming from the Cagerz bench. Gary's bench contributed just 18 points in a losing cause.
