Steelheads defeat Skyforce

GARY, Ind. (January 17, 2004) – The newest Steelheads hit some key free throws in the closing seconds Saturday night.

Aki Thomas made two key free throws with six seconds left and Justus Thigpen made 1 of 2 with four seconds left as the Steelheads defeated the Sioux Falls Skyforce 114-110 on Saturday night.

Thomas' free throw gave the Steelheads a 113-110 lead. Sioux Falls' Darrick Martin missed a 3-pointer and Gary got the rebound. Thigpen was fouled and made the second of two attempts to put the game away.

The Steelheads won 4.5 quarter points and head into the All-Star Break 15-13. Sioux Falls saw its five-game winning streak snapped and is 13-13. The two teams split the weekend series.

The Steelheads outscored the Skyforce 35-25 to win the final quarter. Ray Thomas scored 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter. Thomas' 15 tie a season high for him. Immanuel McElroy scored a season-high 32 points and had a season-high 11 rebounds. Jemeil Rich also had a double-double with 23 points and 12 assists. In all, six Steelheads scored in double figures. David Graves and Shelly scored 12 points each. Galen Young added 11.

Sioux Falls' James Head scored a season-high 29 points as five Skyforce scored in double figures. Leonard White and Darrin Hancock each had a double-double. White scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds. Hancock scored 18 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds.

The two teams split the first quarter as Gary's Galen Young made two free throws with no time left to tie the game at 25. Sioux Falls won the second quarter 31-28 as Damian Owens made a field goal with one second left. Rich's 3-point attempt at the buzzer was no good. Sioux Falls won the third quarter, 29-26.

The Steelheads next game is Friday, January 23 when they host the Dakota Wizards. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at the Genesis Convention Center. It is NIPSCO Night. Just say "NIPSCO" at the box office and you can purchase an upper level general admission seat for just $1.
