GARY, Indiana (December 23, 2005) - The Gary Steelheads got an early holiday present at the Genesis Center Friday night, defeating the Sioux Falls Skyforce 85-77. The Steelheads moved back to .500 on the season and kept pace in the Eastern Conference race with the Rockford Lightning, who won at Michigan 115-104.
Guard Jimmie "Snap" Hunter paced the Steelheads with one of his best overall performances to date, scoring 29 points with 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocked shots. Randy Holcomb added 21 points, with 7 rebounds and 4 assists.
Two new Steelheads made an immediate impact in their first appearance with the team. 7-foot-1 center Chris Alexander grabbed a team-high 18 rebounds, while scoring 11 points and blocking 3 shots. 6-foot-9 forward Edmund Saunders added 11 points with 3 rebounds. A third new player, Ryan Edwards, was signed just before the game and played only four minutes.
The Steelheads won the battle of the boards 48-47, only the fourth time this season Gary has outrebounded an opponent. They also committed just 14 turnovers. This combination helped the Steelheads overcome .382 field goal shooting for the game. By going inside with a more physical lineup, the Steelheads generated nine more points than the Skyforce from the free throw line.
Sioux Falls was paced by Brandon Hunter, who scored 21 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. Former Steelhead Renaldo Major added 17 points in a losing cause.
The Steelheads travel to Muskegon to take on the Michigan Mayhem on Christmas evening. The game will air on WJOB (1230khz) in Hammond and WIMS (1420khz) in Michigan City, with airtime set for 6:00PM CST.
