
Steelheads Defeat Patroons 98-86

GARY, Indiana (April 22, 2007) - The Gary Steelheads finished their first USBL homestand on a winning note, defeating the Albany Patroons 98-86 at the Genesis Center. For the sixth straight game, the Steelheads held their opponent below 100 points.
The Steelheads broke out early, building a 14-point lead by the end of the first quarter. They increased the lead to 27 points, before the Patroons fought their way back to a 63-62 deficit, when guard Ronald Ross connected on a 12-footer at 1:12 of the third quarter. But when swingman Ray Cunningham was fouled, he hit both free throws to hold off the Patroons for a 65-62 lead. From there, the Steelheads outscored the Patroons 9-2 to regain the lead for good.
For the second straight game, guard Carl Edwards paced the Steelheads' attack with 17 points. Cunningham added 16 points for the winners, while forward Jamario Moon contributed a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds against his former team. Forward Adam Schaper logged his sixth straight double-digit game with 14 points. Former Steelhead Corey Hightower paced the Patroons with 26 points, committing only a single turnover in nearly 40 minutes of action. Guard Ronald Ross added 22 for Albany.
Although Gary had 17 fewer field goal attempts, they connected on 32 field goals to Albany's 31. The Steelheads held the Patroons to just .360 shooting from the field, while shooting .464 themselves. Gary consistently fed the ball inside, leading to 29-of-40 from the foul line compared to the Patroon's 14-of-18. The Steelheads won the boards, 54-40.
The Steelheads will have a week off, before heading to Jackson, Mississippi to take on the Wildcats on Monday, April 30th. That game will be the first of a seven-game road trip.
