Gary Steelheads News Release
GARY, Indiana (May 10, 2007) - The Gary Steelheads conclude their Eastern road swing Thursday night against the Delaware Starz at Delaware College in Newcastle, Delaware. Gary is still in search of its first USBL road win, although the team was awarded two forfeit victories at Jackson beginning the trip.
The Steelheads' first losing streak as a USBL franchise increased to three straight with a 109-92 defeat at Brooklyn Monday night. The Steelheads placed five players in double figures, but thirty turnovers derailed any chance at success. Guard Carl Edwards suffered a team-high six errors, while forward Jamario Moon turned the ball over four times.
Throughout the road trip, the Steelheads have had one quarter that has done them in. At Albany, they lost a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter to lose. The next night, a poor second quarter proved fatal in a rematch. With Brooklyn, it was the first quarter that proved too much. The Steelheads were outscored 39-17. Gary wasn't outscored again the rest of the way, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Gary had its best shooting night on the road trip against the Kings, hitting at a .515 clip from the field and .412 from three point range. The Kings, however, shot nearly as well and made seven more field goals for the game.
The Steelheads were paced by Moon, who scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Edwards tossed in 15, while forward Marlowe Currie added 14 points while tying for the rebound lead with eight. Louis White had 13 points and 9 assists, missing only one shot for the entire evening. Corey Minnifield added 10 points in a losing cause. Greg Plummer of the Kings paced all scorers with 27 points, while Abdul Mills added 20 points and Randy Orr fired in 18 points with 8 rebounds. The Steelheads record fell to 7-4 with the defeat.
This will be the second USBL meeting between the Steelheads and the Starz, with Gary winning the first meeting at the Genesis Center, 107-91.
