Gary Steelheads News Release
GARY, Indiana (June 15, 2007) - It wasn't the final score that mattered. The fans came to see basketball, and the Gary Steelheads put on a great show on Fan Appreciation Night at the Genesis Center.
The Steelheads divided into two units, with the white uniforms defeating the black uniforms, 114-108. In the spirit of the evening, there were plenty of great performances to go around. And a halftime dunk contest gave Steelheads' players a chance to show their stuff, both figuratively and literally!
The White-uniformed squad seized the game in the opening minutes, building the lead to as many as 22 points. In the fourth quarter the Black-uniformed squad fought back and had a chance to take the lead. But the White uniforms held off the charge for the victory.
For the first time in his professional career in Gary, guard Lonnie Randolph lead all scorers with 26 points. The product of Merrillville High School also grabbed 7 rebounds and handed out 9 assists. Guard Eddy Barlow paced the winners with a double-double of 25 points and 13 assists. Other double-double performances were turned in by center Mark McCarroll (21 points, 13 rebounds), guard Louis White (16 points, 10 assists), forward David Monds (20 points, 21 rebounds) and forward Jamario Moon (24 points, 10 rebounds). Moon also had five blocked shots for the evening.
The White squad had a 20-rebound edge on the boards, 59-39. Monds, McCarroll and White accounted for 44 of those rebounds collectively.
A crowd in excess of 2,000 enjoyed the game and stayed until the end. The Steelheads signed autographs and met with fans after the game concluded.
