Alabama Steeldogs News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham Steeldogs' 2006 training camp roster just got a little deeper.

Kerry Wright, the record-setting receiver from Middle Tennessee State, and Earin Bridges, a former signee of the AFL's Philadelphia Soul, became the 32nd and 33rd players assigned to the Steeldogs during the off-season.

Wright (5-9, 177 lbs) re-wrote the record book during his time with the Blue Raiders from 2001 to 2004. He is first and second all-time in most receiving yards during a single season with 1,280 in 2003 and 1,048 in 2004. He is first and second all-time in receiving touchdowns during a single season with 11 in 2004 and nine in 2003. Overall, Wright caught 22 touchdown passes in his MTSU career, more than any other Blue Raiders receiver.

All totaled, Wright caught 167 passes for 2,589 yards, with those numbers almost exclusive to the 2003 and 2004 seasons. During those two years in Murfreesboro, Wright registered 10 100-yard receiving games. He was invited to participate in the Indianapolis Colts' 2005 training camp before signing with the AFL's Nashville Kats at the end of the year. However, a hamstring strain ended his camp prematurely.

"I saw Kerry at the Nashville camp and was very impressed," said Steeldogs' Head Coach Ron Selesky. "Not only is he fast, but he was picking up the game very quickly. "It's unfortunate for him that he tweaked his hamstring a little and couldn't continue camp, but it's a blessing for us because we're getting a bonafide NFL-caliber playmaker."

Bridges (5-11, 200 lbs) was a standout defensive back at Grambling University before signing with the Philadelphia Soul in 2005. He spent the majority of the season on the team's practice squad.

"It's always beneficial when you get a player with some AFL experience like Earin has," Selesky said. "I've known about him for sometime through [current Atlanta Falcons scout and former AFL coach] Bruce Plummer, who coached him in high school.

"He was a very productive player at Grambling and can play at either defensive specialist or on both sides of the ball."

The seventh season of Steeldogs football kicks off on April 8 at the BJCC Arena. Reserve your tickets now by calling (205) 458-8833!
