San Jose Stealth News Release
SAN JOSE - The San Jose Stealth (4-9), thanks to goals scored by Ryan Boyle and Derek Malawsky in the last 32 seconds, snapped a seven-game losing streak by defeating the Anaheim Storm (2-9), 15-14, before 5,022 fans at HP Pavilion at San Jose.
The win was the first in 55 days for the Stealth since a 12-10 win over the Colorado Mammoth in San Jose on Jan. 29. San Jose's 15 goals also set a season high.
As has been the case all season, the road to victory wasn't easy for the Stealth. San Jose was outshot in the first quarter, 10-5, but gave up only three goals and scored two, thanks to Curt Malawsky at 7:13 and Darren Reisig at 13:26.
The Stealth dominated play in the second quarter by scoring five goals in a 2 minute, 42 second span. Five different players - Derek Malawsky, Boyle, Brad Dairon, Luke Gilbert and Curt Malawsky - put the ball in the net as San Jose led 8-6 at the intermission.
San Jose held on to the lead, 12-9, after three quarters. Gilbert, Matt Alrich, Curt Malawsky and Cam Sedgwick scored the four Stealth goals.
But things got interesting in the fourth quarter. Anaheim tied the game, 12-12, by scoring the quarter's first three goals. Peter Morgan, Ryan Powell and Casey Powell gave the Storm a chance. Sedgwick's goal at 6:47 gave the Stealth a temporary 13-12 lead. Anaheim answered at 9:57 on Casey Powell's fourth goal of the game and took a 14-13 lead on Richard Morgan's score at 11:45.
However, San Jose saved its best for last. At 14:28, Boyle tied the game with his second goal of the night. And after Anaheim goaltender Matt King's outlet pass was stolen by the Stealth at the center line, Derek Malawsky scored the game-winner at 14:56.
RADAR BLIPS: Not only was San Jose's 15 goals the most they've scored in a game this season, it's also the most in a game since they defeated the Arizona Sting by scoring a franchise-record 19 goals on April 10, 2004. The 15 goals is the third-highest mark in Stealth history ... Curt Malawsky and Cam Sedgwick each scored three goals to lead the Stealth ... Gary Rosyski and Derek Malawsky each tied a franchise record with six assists ... Anaheim's leading scorer was Casey Powell, who had four goals and six assists ... Anthony Cosmo earned the win in net for San Jose by making 32 saves on 46 shots ... One reason for San Jose's victory was their success on the power play. The Stealth converted four of six chances, while Anaheim was successful on three of nine opportunities ... San Jose is now 2-5 at home ... The Stealth complete the home-and-home series against the Storm on Saturday night at Arrowhead Pond. San Jose has split one and lost two home-and-homes this season.
