San Jose Stealth News Release

SAN JOSE - San Jose Stealth General Manager Johnny Mouradian selected the most sought after goaltender in this year's draft, Matt Vinc, in the first round (sixth overall) in the 2005 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft.

Vinc, a standout goaltender, has box lacrosse experience, playing for the St. Catherines Athletics in the Ontario Lacrosse Association. In eight games for the Athletics, he has posted a 10.70 goals-against average with 89 goals allowed.

The six-foot-two, 225-pound, St. Catherines, Ontario native played defense for Canisius College, garnering Second-Team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference honors after leading the Golden Griffins with 63 ground balls. Vinc scored a career-high two goals his last season, while constantly drawing the opposing team's top offensive threat. A preseason All-MAAC selection, Vinc ranks fifth all-time at Canisius with 258 ground balls and is fourth in ground balls per game with 4.96. He is a three-time MAAC All-Academic selection.

"Matt is one of the up and coming goaltenders," Mouradian said. "He's going to be our third goalie this year, making it really nice to have three quality goalies."

With their second pick of the first round (eighth overall), San Jose selected forward Jeff Zywicki from the University of Massachusetts. Zywicki was regarded as the most complete offensive package available in the 2005 draft. Playing for the Brooklin Redmen of the OLA, he ranks third on the team in points with 48 (21 goals, 27 assists) in 15 games.

The five-foot-nine, 195-pound Napean, Ontario native ranked second on UMass with 36 goals and 43 points in 2005. Named to Inside Lacrosse's Sharpshooters list, Zywicki boasts one of the most accurate shots in the nation.

"Zywicki is a proven goal scorer that will help us out on our right side," Mouradian said.

San Jose selected defenseman Ed Brown from Middlebury College with their third pick of the draft (first round, 11th overall). Brown was selected as a first team USILA All-American, while helping lead the Panthers to a 17-2 record this season, an NESCAC Championship and a trip to the NCAA championship game.

Brown was a leader of a Middlebury defense this season that allowed just 8.21 goals per game. He played in all 18 games, ending the season fourth on the team with 53 ground balls.

With their first pick of the second round (19th overall), San Jose selected forward Jarret Park from Syracuse University. Park is best known for his speed and toughness, especially on loose balls. He led Syracuse in ground balls each of his first three seasons and finished with 278 for his career. Over his career, Park amassed 49 points (26 goals, 23 assists). He helped lead Syracuse to national championship titles in 2002 and 2004.

With their final four picks, San Jose selected forward Tony Frick from Brown University (third round, 25th overall), defenseman Daryl Seymour from Bucknell University (fourth round, 36th overall), defenseman Grant Halford from Loyola College (fifth round, 47th overall) and forward Will Patton from the University of California at Santa Barbara.

"We're very excited about all our guys," Mouradian said. "We got everyone that we wanted. They are all excited about the opportunity to play and live in San Jose." A complete draft list follows.
