Stealth Pull Off Two Major Trades And Improve Offense
January 7, 2005 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
San Jose Stealth News Release
SAN JOSE - San Jose Stealth Managing Director, General Manager and Head Coach Johnny Mouradian announced today that the organization has acquired veteran forward Curt Malawsky from Buffalo in exchange for a second round draft pick in the 2006 NLL Entry Draft, and his brother, forward Derek Malawsky and a second round draft pick in the 2006 draft from Minnesota for defenseman Kelly Hall and the team's first round draft pick in the 2007 draft.
The trade will bring two legitimate veteran playmakers to the young Stealth team, and looks to boost the offense of the Stealth immensely.
Last season with the Vancouver Ravens, Curt posted 44 points (23 goals and 21 assists) in only 10 games. Before joining Vancouver, he suited up for the Rochester Knighthawks for six straight seasons. Entering his eighth NLL season, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound forward has notched 327 points (157 goals and 170 assists) in 84 games. In his tenure with the Knighthawks, Curt reached the Champion's Cup game in three out of six seasons.
Curt's older brother Derek played for Rochester each of the last three seasons. The six-year NLL veteran had an outstanding season last year, posting 78 points (24 goals and 54 assists) in 16 games. His 54 assists tied him for fourth in the NLL last season. The 6-foot, 175-pound native of Coquitlam, British Columbia has accumulated 382 points (135 goals and 247 assists) in 82 career games.
"It is always nice when your team can pick up two veteran offensive players to add to your offense, especially the caliber of the Malawsky brothers," said Mouradian. "Curt is a great leader both on and off the floor and Derek is one of the top playmakers in the NLL."
Hall played in six games for the Stealth last season, posting 10 points (one goal and nine assists). In addition to Hall, the Stealth will be giving up top round draft picks in each of the next two drafts.
The trade is still pending league approval.
The Malawsky brothers are scheduled to make their Stealth debut tomorrow night when the team comes home to avenge their early round exit of the playoffs last year to the eventual champion Calgary Roughnecks at 7:30 p.m. at HP Pavilion at San Jose. Tickets are still available at Ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations, by calling 408-999-5700 or at the HP Pavilion box office.
