SAN JOSE - San Jose Stealth General Manager Johnny Mouradian has announced the hiring of Walt Christianson as the new head coach of the Stealth.
Christianson served as an assistant coach for the Colorado Mammoth from 2003-05. The Victoria, British Columbia resident served with the Calgary Roughnecks from 2001-03 before joining the Mammoth. A defensive specialist with both Calgary and Colorado, Christianson is considered a player's coach and is regarded as one of the brightest minds in the game.
"I'm very excited to join the Stealth organization," Christianson said. "I look forward to working with the players and the management staff in San Jose. We have a strong nucleus of guys coming back as well as some solid goaltending. It's a great team."
A three-time Western Lacrosse Association Coach of the Year (1990, 2001 and 2002), Christianson led the Victoria Shamrocks to the Mann Cup Championship in 2003, adding to the two Cups he won as a player. He played for the Shamrocks for 12 years and has won four Canadian field lacrosse championships as well.
In addition, Christianson served as an assistant coach with the Canadian National Indoor team that won the inaugural World Championships in 2002 in Toronto. Christianson teaches high school social studies, history and physical education and lives in Victoria with his wife, Julia, and two sons.
"I've known Walt over the years when he played for Team Canada in the Field World Championships in Australia," Mouradian said. "He's one of the top coaches in the indoor game and is very deserving of the opportunity to coach a team in this league. The organization and the players are truly excited to have Walt on board."
Mouradian will step down as head coach of the Stealth after leading the team for two seasons. He will continue his duties as general manager and serve as the team's offensive coordinator and assist on the business front.
