San Jose Stealth News Release

It's over. A promising season and the first West Division crown for Stealth all ended in disappointment Sunday afternoon at H.P. Pavilion with a disheartening 18-16 defeat. The Stealth lost out on a wild flurry of goals in the fourth quarter. Defense man Brad MacDonald scored the go-ahead goal off the faceoff with just under three minutes remaining. The Stealth then had three shots on goal during the last possession but couldn't score. The Stealth simply couldn't stop Portland forward Dan Dawson, who scored a mind-numbing seven goals. Even in the rare moments, the Stealth held Dawson, he simply found an open man; Dawson distributed seven assists.

FIRST QUARTER

Coming into the game, the Stealth wanted to shut down Portland's leading scorer Dan Dawson. It worked for the first 32 seconds. Dawson scored on first two shots of the game as Portland took a quick 2-1 lead. Gary Rosyski made the most spectacular goal of the quarter with a behind-the-back shot that squeezed past goalie Matt Disher. FIRST QUARTER SCORE: 4-3.

SECOND QUARTER

The Stealth threatened to blow out Portland, by scoring four straight goals and building a 8-3 advantage behind inspired goal scoring by forward and team leading scorer Jeff Zywicki. Shut out for the only time this season in the last meeting against Portland, Zywicki poured in three straight goals, including one in which he weaved through the entire LumberJax defense for the goal. Overall, the Stealth benefitted from an uptempo style. But Portland slowed the game down and made a flurry of five straight goals to tie the score. Portland took advantage of the center of the San Jose defense. Portland tied the score at 8, before rookie Frank Resetarits broke the Stealth scoring drought with a goal just before the half. FIRST HALF SCORE: 9-8.

THIRD QUARTER

Frank Resetarits ended the first half with a goal and started the second with another score. In a game of streaks, the Stealth a lurched to 12-9 lead. But that man again, Dan Dawson, came back to score his fourth goal of the afternoon to trim the lead to 12-10. The game through three quarters was squeaky clean, with no one serving any penalty minutes. Brad MacDonald snuck past the Stealth defense and was open for several seconds for an easy breakaway goal. Then Dan Dawson scored his fifth goal of the afternoon to ties the score going into the fourth quarter. The Stealth went over eight minutes without scoring.

FOURTH QUARTER

The LumberJax got thrown into the box for the first penalty minutes of the entire game, when Peter Morgan slammed defensemen Kyle Sorensen in the face. He was only caught for two-minute penalty, instead of the five-minute variety. The Steath couldn't take advantage of the power play, but San Jose broke a near 11-minute scoring drought when Cam Sedgwick put back his own rebound to tie the game. Colin Doyle and Jeff Zywicki then scored two rapid goals as the Stealth took a brief lead. Ryan Powell scored a quick goal to tie the score. In all, the two teams scored four goals in just over 70 seconds. Dawson bullied his way through traffic and scored his seventh goal of the afternoon, even though a defender hit his stick. The ball leaked out his stick and dribbled into the net for the go-ahead goal with 4:17 left. After that, Anthony Cosmo was pulled for Aaron Bold.
