State College Spikes - Pittsburgh Pirates (14-13) @ Connecticut Tigers - Detroit Tigers (14-13)
Game #28 / Road Game #14 RHP Quinton Miller (0-0, 5.40) vs. RHP Patrick Cooper (1-1, 4.09)
-SPIKES FINISH FIRST HALF OF ROAD TRIP: The State College Spikes take on the Connecticut Tigers in the last game of their three-game series tonight at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. After the game, the Spikes will finish off their six-game road trip with a trio of contests against the Auburn Doubledays. State College is 6-8 all-time against the Tigers, who were located in Oneonta, NY prior to this season.
-LAST GAME: Connecticut right-hander Clemente Mendoza, who came into last night's game with a 7.88 ERA, held State College to just two hits and a walk over eight innings of work, guiding the Tigers to a 5-0 win at Dodd Stadium. Mendoza allowed more than one baserunner in an inning just once, when the Spikes left runners on first and third thanks to a hit and a walk. Walker Gourley and Miguel Mendez were the lone Spikes with hits off of Mendoza, while Matt Curry extended his hit streak to 12 with a ninth-inning single.
-MILLER LOOKS FOR ANOTHER STRONG OUTING: Right-hander Quinton Miller makes the third start of his minor league rehabilitation assignment for the Spikes tonight. Miller rebounded from his first State College outing of 2010 to post four scoreless innings against Vermont on Sunday, setting the table for Kevin Decker to finish off a 3-0 shutout victory. The right-hander is making his first road start with the Spikes this season.
-COOPER GETS THE CALL FOR TIGERS: Right-hander Patrick Cooper gets the mound assignment for Connecticut this evening. After a single-inning relief appearance on June 30th, Cooper has gone exactly five innings in each of his last two starts, defeating Mahoning Valley on July 4th and dropping a decision to Williamsport this past Sunday.
-DECKER EARNS NYPL HONORS: Spikes right-hander Kevin Decker was named the NYPL Pitcher of the Week for July 5-11. Decker logged 10.1 scoreless innings on the week.
