Stars Split Doubleheader with Barons

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - To finish off a four-game set at Joe Davis Stadium, the Huntsville Stars split a doubleheader with the Birmingham Barons on Tuesday night.

In game one, the Stars were able to snap a five-game losing streak against the Barons, winning by a score of 8-3. Falling behind by a score of 3-1 initially, Huntsville became the beneficiaries of a five-run fourth inning to carry them to victory.

In the fourth inning, the Stars got a RBI single from shortstop Tommy Manzella to begin the scoring. Followed by a sacrifice fly by left fielder T.J Middelstaedt, a RBI double from second baseman Scooter Gennett gave the Stars their first lead of the ballgame. The next at-bat, a two-run homer from first baseman Hunter Morris put the Stars up by a score of 6-3.

Aside from that surge, the Stars offense was lead by right fielder Kentrail Davis, who went 3-for-3 at the plate with two triples and a solo home run in the sixth inning. Center fielder Josh Prince also chipped in with a solo shot of his own in the seventh inning.

On the pitching side, Stars starter Hiram Burgos improved to 5-1 on the season with yet another quality start. The 24-year-old righty gave up three runs on six hits in six innings of work while striking out six Barons hitters in the process.

In game two, the Barons evened up the doubleheader and took the series win with a 12-5 victory.

Birmingham got out to the early lead in the second with four runs off of Stars starter Dan Meadows. Designated hitter Andy Wilkins gave the Barons their first run by scoring from third on a wild pitch from Meadows after singling to lead off the inning. The rest of the frame was highlighted by a two-run home run by first baseman Seth Loman and a RBI single by shortstop Tyler Saladino.

After two more runs from the Barons in the third to make the score 6-0, the Stars scored four runs to cut their deficit to two. In the third, Huntsville got a home run by catcher Adam Weisenburger to put them on the board. For Weisenburger, the solo shot was his first long ball of his Double-A career.

In the sixth inning, a pair of RBI doubles from Gennett and Morris and a RBI single by third baseman Hainley Statia made the score 6-4.

After that point, Birmingham blew the game wide open with seven runs in the seventh inning. The 12 runs given up by the Stars pitching staff was the third time in four games they have given up double-digit run totals.

On the pitching side, Meadows, making his first start of the season and third since 2009, took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season. The 24-year-old lefty gave up four runs in just two innings of work.

After an off day on Wednesday, the Stars will hit the road on Thursday to begin a four-game set with the Jackson Generals as the first destination of a nine-game road trip.
