August 25, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Huntsville Stars News Release
Zebulon, NC â In danger of being swept in a possible championship series preview, Huntsville recovered from a shaky first inning to score 10 unanswered runs in a 10-2 thumping of Carolina on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium. The Stars (33-29) salvaged the finale of a four-game series and remained 2½ games back of first-place Birmingham in the Southern League West second-half chase.
On Saturday night, the Mudacats' six-run first propelled them to a 12-6 romp. Sunday, Huntsville turned the tables on Carolina, sending 10 men to the plate in a decisive six-run third inning rally. Down 2-1 with one out in the third, Corey Hart singled and Brandon Gemoll reached on second baseman Jesus Medrano's error. Daryl Clark ripped a two-run double to left-center and Chris Barnwell walked. Mike Kremblas lined a hit-and-run single to right, scoring Clark and sending Barnwell to third. Pitcher Ben Hendrickson laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Barnwell raced home on the throw to first. After Dave Krynzel walked, Brad Nelson lashed a double into the rightfield corner, his fifth in two games, to score both Barnwell and Kremblas for a 7-2 Stars lead.
J.J. Hardy launched a leadoff homer to left-center in the sixth, and Huntsville added two more in the eighth on Barnwell's run-scoring single and Mike Kremblas' bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. Kremblas was plunked three times in the game â equaling a Southern League record and matching his career-high â and five times in the four-game series.
Ben Hendrickson (7-5) notched the win for Huntsville, allowing two unearned runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts over five solid innings.
Travis Hutchinson (2-3) suffered the loss, surrendering eight hits and seven runs, three earned, walking three and fanning one. Stars reliever Brian Adams recorded his second save, authoring four shutout frames, permitting two hits while striking out four.
Huntsville returns home for a pivotal four-game series against division-leading Birmingham, with game one Monday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Right-hander Greg Bruso (0-0, 0.00) makes his Stars debut after coming to Milwaukee in a deal with Kansas City. Lefty Corwin Malone (2-2, 7.16) returns to the Southern League for his start since with the Barons since May. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
