TRAVERSE CITY - The Motor City Metal Jackets won the first, third, and all-important fifth period on the scoreboard Saturday night, claiming a 4-3 shootout victory over the host Traverse City North Stars in the finale of a two-game set at Centre ICE arena.
The Stars took three of four points in the series, which will have an unofficial rubber match next Sunday at Centre ICE when the Jackets visit again for an afternoon matinee. Traverse City (24-12-3) is five points ahead of second-place Marquette in the NAHL North Division standings. The Rangers swept a weekend series from Alpena.
The Metal Jackets scored the lone goal of the first period, but the Stars dominated the middle frame, scoring a pair of goals - Sean Burke (Traverse City, MI/TC North Stars) at 6:07 and Nick Shkreli (Romeo, MI/Mahoning Valley NAHL) less than two minutes later - and outshooting Motown, 12-4.
Doug Clifford (Woodhaven, MI/Mahoning Valley NAHL) registered a power play goal 9:32 into the third stanza sandwiched between a pair of Jackets tallies to force the overtime and subsequent shootout. Eric McLintock (Traverse City, MI/TC North Stars) potted the lone shootout marker, while Motor City struck for three.
Chris Salomone (Homer Glen, IL/TC North Stars) and Phil Wendecker (Westland, MI/TC North Stars) assisted on Burke's career-best ninth of the year, McLintock and Andy Huff (Howell, MI/Honeybaked U18/Ferris State) set up Shkreli, and Garrett Thompson (Traverse City, MI/TC North Stars) and Chris Heineman (New Boston, MI/TC North Stars) drew assists on Clifford's third period marker.
Chris Paliafito (Shelbyville, KY/Owatonna NAHL) worked the home pipes and stopped 21 of 24 shots.
