Niagara Stars News Release

(Trois Rivieres, PQ) The Niagara Stars (1-1) of the Canadian Baseball League captured the first victory in team history with a 7-2 defeat of the Trois Rivieres Saints (1-1). The Stars scored all seven runs in the second inning on timely hitting and a series of errors and miscues by the Saints.

Stars second baseman Toby Legacy opened the scoring courtesy of a two run bases loaded single. Third baseman Nelwin Oquendo would score next batter with help of a passed ball, before outfielder Raul Borjas singled scoring Legacy. Outfielder Rich Butler followed with an RBI single of his own, putting the Stars up 5-0.

The final two runs of the inning were scored as Borjas reached home on an error, and catcher Rogelio Arias singled to score Butler.

Fortunately seven runs were enough, as the Stars were held scoreless and hitless through the final seven frames.

Stars starter Juan Gonzales (1-0) preserved the victory with the complete game four hitter while amassing nine strikeouts, a 2003 CBL single season high thus far. Gonzales allowed only two runs, with the Saints scoring in the seventh and ninth innings.

Saints starter Nelson Lara (0-1) also pitched a complete game and was accredited only one earned run.

The Stars take on the Saints again tomorrow for the third game of the four game series. The Saints captured the first game 5-1. Next Thursday the Stars will host the London Monarchs for their home opener. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm at Welland Sports Complex. Tickets are available by calling the ticket office at 905 714 9883.
