Soo Indians News Release

(Sault Ste. Marie, MI) Soo Kewadin Casinos Indians Hockey Coach Joe Shawhan, has confirmed that Indians rookie defenseman Jim Jorgensen of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, has verbally committed to play for the Ferris State Bulldogs of the CCHA. Jorgensen is the second Indian's player to join Head Coach Bob Daniel's Ferris State Bulldogs. Last month teammate Derek MacIntyre also committed to play for the Bulldogs for the 2004-05 season.

Considered a rookie this year, Jorgensen actually played for the Indians in last season's National Tournament after being called up at the conclusion of the Midget AAA season. He was instrumental to the Indians defensive corps, helping the team to a runner-up finish in the USA Hockey Jr. A National Championship Tournament.

This season, the smooth skating rear guard drew some much-deserved attention and finished tied for 10th in defensive scoring with 8-goals and 23-assists for a total of 31-points in NAHL league play. Overall, he accumulated 11-goals and 27-assists for 38-points.

"Jim is an example of what we would love to develop within our program," stated Indians Coach Joe Shawhan. "He has been able to play his entire minor career in Sault Ste. Marie. He will be a standard for many others to follow." Jorgensen played Midget AAA hockey for the Indians, before moving on to the Junior A team last season.

"Ferris is getting a highly skilled defenseman, who likes to handle the puck. He has tremendous vision and likes to be creative. Jim is strong at all special team's aspects, which will immediately contribute to his playing time. He is solid at 200 lbs., and certainly has the skills to be an impact college player," Shawhan added.

Jim Jorgensen, a Sault Tribe member, is the second local Indian's player to commit to a NCAA Division I college for next season. Earlier this season, Soo native Jason Blain committed to Northeastern University.

An NAHL All Rookie team candidate, Jorgensen is the seventh member of the Indian's team to commit to Division I college for next season. Logan Bittle (Robert Morris), Stavros Paskaris (Wayne State), Mark Lutz (Vermont), Derek MacIntyre (Ferris State), Derek Punches (Air Force), and Jason Blain (Northeastern University) all committed to play for Division I college teams next season.
