ABA Saint John Riptide

Stan Spirou To Play In Millrats Inaugural Game

November 7, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Saint John Riptide News Release

The Manchester Millrats of the American Basketball Association (ABA) are busy preparing for their inaugural home opener against undefeated cross town rival, the 1-0 Boston Blizzard. It appears they will have some help from an unexpected source: Southern New Hampshire University's Head Men's Basketball Coach, Stan Spirou, will don a uniform and play for Millrats this Sunday.

A unique ABA rule allows the home team to dress a local celebrity, and Millrats co-owner David Cooper chose Coach Spirou.

"Coach is a great person and has meant a lot to this community so we'd thought we reward him with a fun experience," explained Cooper, who is not only an owner but also a player on the team.

Coach Spirou is in his 22nd season as Head Men's Basketball Coach at SNHU. A 1974 graduate of Keene State, Spirou has guided the Penman to an overall mark of 446-184 (.708) during his tenure. The Penman have averaged 22 wins per season since his hiring, and have 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, 4 NCAA Regional titles, and 6 NECC Tournament championships.

Coach Spirou will be joined on the Millrats roster by former SNHU players P.J. Young (2002-2006) and David Cooper (2001-2002), along with former SNHU nemesis's Stacey Moragne (Umass-Lowell), Ismael Caro (New Haven), and John Huggins (American International).

The Manchester Millrats would also like to invite members of the Media to a luncheon, catered by 3 C's, on Saturday at the Sleep Inn in Londonderry, NH beginning at noon. The Millrats players, coaching staff and ownership will be available for interviews and questioning. This is an excellent opportunity to gain access just prior to the opening game on Sunday. Media passes to all games will be on hand at the luncheon for distribution.

The Millrats are a new entry in the American Basketball Association (ABA), and will play their home games in the 'Fieldhouse' on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, NH. The season and home opener is set for Sunday November 11, 2007 at 4:35 p.m. versus the Boston Blizzard. Single game, season and half season ticket plans are on sale now on www.manchestermillrats.com or by calling 1-866-9-GET TIX (1-866-943-8849).

Come out and cheer on Coach Spirou and the rest of the Manchester Millrats this Sunday at 4:35 pm!

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
