Harrisburg Stampede News Release
HARRISBURG, PA (Apr 4, 2014) - The Harrisburg Stampede started the season last Sunday with an impressive win over American Division foe the Columbus Lions. The game got off to a slow start as both teams felt each other out as the Lions took a slim 34-31 lead into the half. A key UNO by Stampede K Cap Poklema (PIFL Special Teams Player of the Week) changed the momentum into Harrisburg's favor. A 26-point 4th quarter for the Stampede put the game out of reach, and they pulled away for a 71-54 victory in front of an excited record crowd at home. This week, the Stampede will take their show on the road to Nashville.
The Nashville Venom team is coming off a somewhat surprising win over the defending PIFL champion Alabama Hammers. After taking a 27-27 tie into the half, the Venom used a stingy defense to outscore the Hammers 29-13 in the second half on their way to a first league win.
Matchup to Watch :
The quarterback play for both teams was very strong in Week 1.
Harrisburg Stampede QB EJ Nemeth was a man among boys, rushing for 90 yards and a team record 8 rushing TDs, while passing for two more scores (completing 21 of 28 attempts for 258 yards), on his way to earning PIFL Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Nashville Venom signal caller Alex Carder played well in the opener as well, completing 19 passes for 220 yards and seven scoring tosses on the day.
The Venom and Stampede were two of the three new PIFL teams to defeat their more established counterparts on opening weekend (Trenton). This could be another exciting, high flying contest as Nashville hosts it's first home game in the PIFL.
Kickoff is set for 8:00pm EST at Nashville Municipal Arena.
