Newark Bears News Release

Newark, NJ- We would like to thank a special group of 5th graders from St. Philip's Academy that did an amazing job of creating Mardi Gras themed mini floats and crowns for our 2012 Annual Mardi Gras Ball. Two of the crowns were selected to be used in the Royal Court to crown our Royal Prince and Duke.

The purpose of the Annual Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball, which is comprised of prominent business leaders, community leaders and celebrities, is to showcase the best in Newark, NJ by electing worthy individuals who make a difference in the community and appointing them Royal titles and rewarding them for all their hard work. To be appointed a Royal title is indeed a great honor that money can not buy. In addition to honoring individuals that make a difference, we also create Arts & Crafts Programs for youth organizations and schools to showcase their talent and efforts in making Mardi Gras themed displays which are then auctioned off to help raise money for their schools and organizations.

This group of kids from St. Philip's Academy love school! They have been at St. Philip's Academy since they were in Kindergarten and they love helping their friends, classmates and teachers. They treat everyone as if they were family. Each quarter they make the Dean's and Headmaster's list, participate in after school activities and still manage to keep on top of their academics. Their favorite subjects include English, Math and History. This group of students is also members of the student government and they are journalists in the making - participating in the school newspaper called SPAzine.

St. Philip's Academy is an independent, K-8 school that provides a unique, educational opportunity for inner-city students in the greater Newark area. Every student accepted to the School is able to attend, regardless of their family's ability to pay tuition. They prepare their students to succeed at the most selective secondary schools in the nation and have also taken their value of the environment and healthy eating a step forward with the launch of their EcoSPACES Program.
