Representatives from the Springfield-Greene County Park Board and Springfield Lasers tennis team will travel to the Miami, Fla. area next Tuesday, April 1, to participate in the player draft at the Sony Ericsson Open for the 2008 Springfield Lasers team. The Lasers compete in the World Team Tennis Pro League presented by Advanta.

The draft process comes in the middle of the Sony Ericsson Open tournament, which runs March 26 through April 6. The only combined 12-day Tennis Masters Series event on the ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour calendars, the Sony Ericsson Open features the world's top-ranked pros - 96 men and 96 women in singles competition, and 32 men's teams and 32 women's teams in doubles action. More information can be found at .

Team members selected at the draft will then move on to compete in the 11-team WTT Pro League, entering its 33rd season of play in 2008. The 2008 WTT season also welcomes the league debut of the Washington Kastles, a new franchise located in the Washington, D.C., area.

Springfield Lasers 2008 season schedule and ticket information can be located at or by calling the Cooper Tennis Complex at (417) 837-5800. The Lasers' season ultimately ended with a semifinal playoff loss to the Sacramento Capitals, who took the 2007 WTT Championship title.

Billie Jean King and Larry King created the unique gender-balanced team concept in the early 1970s. The format used for a WTT Pro League match features teams comprised of two men, two women and a coach. Each match consists of five sets, with one set each of men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles. The WTT regular season runs Thursday, July 3 to Wednesday, July 23, with 11 teams battling for the coveted King Trophy. The two top teams from both the Western and Eastern Conferences, as well as a wildcard team, advance to the WTT Championship Weekend, July 25 - 27, in Roseville, Calif.

The Springfield Lasers will celebrate its 13th anniversary as a World TeamTennis member in 2008.
