
Springfield Lasers Team to be Announced

Representatives from the Springfield-Greene County Park Board and Springfield Lasers tennis team will travel to the Miami, Fla. area next Tuesday, April 1, to participate in the player draft at the Sony Ericsson Open for the 2008 Springfield Lasers team. The Lasers compete in the World Team Tennis Pro League presented by Advanta.
The draft process comes in the middle of the Sony Ericsson Open tournament, which
runs March 26 through April 6. The only combined 12-day Tennis Masters Series event
on the ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour calendars, the Sony Ericsson Open features
the world's top-ranked pros - 96 men and 96 women in singles competition, and 32
men's teams and 32 women's teams in doubles action. More information can be found
at Team members selected at the draft will then move on to compete in the 11-team WTT
Pro League, entering its 33rd season of play in 2008. The 2008 WTT season also
welcomes the league debut of the Washington Kastles, a new franchise located in
the Washington, D.C., area. Springfield Lasers 2008 season schedule and ticket information can be located at
Billie Jean King and Larry King created the unique gender-balanced team concept in
the early 1970s. The format used for a WTT Pro League match features teams
comprised of two men, two women and a coach. Each match consists of five sets,
with one set each of men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and
mixed doubles. The WTT regular season runs Thursday, July 3 to Wednesday, July 23,
with 11 teams battling for the coveted King Trophy. The two top teams from both
the Western and Eastern Conferences, as well as a wildcard team, advance to the
WTT Championship Weekend, July 25 - 27, in Roseville, Calif. The Springfield Lasers will celebrate its 13th anniversary as a World TeamTennis
member in 2008.
