The Spitfires were victorious in the Soo on Friday evening. They put in a stellar defensive performance backed by Costanzo onroute to victory.
In the first period, the Spits and Greyhounds had a little trouble holding onto the puck in the first period. Both teams committed a few turnovers but were lucky that none ended up in the back of the net. The Spitfires had the first PK of the game and they were successful on the kill. The Spitfires were able to get the games first goal. Maggio started the rush in the neutral zone and ended it with his 51st goal of the season. The Spits then went back on to the PK and were successful again. The Greyhounds led 9-8 in shots after the first period.
In the second period, the Spitfires continued their offensive prowess using speed and skill. Just over 5 minutes into the period, Wright would score his 13th of the season on a similar play to Maggio's back door goal. A few minutes later, the Soo had a glorious opportunity but Costanzo made a huge save coming across to stop Watson. With just 7 minutes left in the period, Holmes would find Harrison and he would one-time his 33rd of the season. The Spitfires had a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes of play. The Shots were tied at 20.
In the third period, the Spitfires were content to hold on. They played a dump and chase game and sat back. They invited a lot of pressure but Joey Costanzo the games #1 star put in a stellar performance and recorded his 1st career shutout!
The Spitfires are back in action against the Soo tomorrow March 18th. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:07pm.
