West Springfield, March 2, 2004 â Springfield Spirit President and Owner Stephen Fox is pleased to announce that this Thursday's NWBL contest between the Spirit and visiting Dallas Fury has been renamed "Rebecca Lobo Night". The Spirit will retire Rebecca's #50 Jersey in a pre-game ceremony to honor her for her many accomplishments with the Spirit and in women's basketball as a whole. Rebecca will also be on hand to sign autographs for forty-five minutes after the game for all fans. President and Owner Stephen Fox is also pleased to announce that a portion of the proceeds from the game will be donated to the "RuthAnn and Rebecca Lobo Scholarship in Allied Health" at the University of Connecticut.
When asked about the festivities for this Thursday night's game, President and Owner Stephen Fox stated, "I am so happy that we are able to bring Rebecca back for this special ceremony. She has meant so much to Springfield Spirit and Professional Women's Basketball, that we are just pleased to be able to honor her in this manor." Fox also stated, "Even with Rebecca's retirement this past summer she is still a fan favorite and will always be a fan favorite. This is why we are so happy that our fans will once again have the opportunity to meet with her and receive autographs after the game."
Along with the pre and post game ceremonies there will also be a game on Thursday night and it will be the third this season between the Fury and the Spirit. The first meeting between the Spirit and the Fury this year saw the visiting Dallas Fury pull off a 75-67 victory, but the Spirit team got back on track in the second meeting with the Spirit winning a hard fought battle by a score of 63-59.
The Springfield Spirit will be led into the game on Thursday by sharp shooter Rita Williams who is scoring 12.9 points per game and will also be looking for offensive support from newly acquired Isabel Stubbs who is averaging 13.3 points per game and Cindy Blodgett with 12.4 points per game. The Fury will be led by Anna DeForge who is averaging 20.3 points per game, Felicia Ragland who is 11.6 points per game and Sheila Lambert with 8.4 points per game.
Individual game tickets are on sale at the Springfield Civic Center Box and Central Connecticut State University box offices. Tickets may also be charged on the phone at 413-787-6600, 800-639-8602 (SCC) and at 860-832-1989 (CCSU). Tickets for the 2004 season may also be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com. The ticket costs at CCSU are $20, $15, and $10 for adults and $12 and $10 for juniors under 18. At Cathedral High School the tickets are $15 and $12 for adults and $10 for juniors under 18.
