SPHL provides Affiliate update

March 27, 2009 - SPHL (SPHL) News Release

Commissioner Jim Combs on behalf of the Board of Governors of the Southern Professional Hockey League expressed "the Board's appreciation to the fans, business communities, team organizations, and players in Winston Salem, North Carolina and Richmond, Virginia for their support and contributions over past seasons for the SPHL, the Twin City Cyclones and the Richmond Renegades." Combs stated, "Unfortunately the current nationwide economic crisis has impacted the future of both SPHL teams and their fans in these communities."

Twin City Cyclones' owner Bob Kerzner, who announced earlier this week that the Cyclones would not return to Winston Salem for the 2009-10 season, is expected to relocate the team to another city in the SPHL's geographical footprint and operate next season. Combs stated that "Mr. Kerzner and SPHL officials are in discussions with several potential communities and expect an announcement on relocation of the team within 45 days."

Combs singled out the past commitment of Richmond Renegades' owner Allan Harvie and his organization for making hockey work in Richmond. "While Allan Harvie has announced that he will cease active operations, The Board of Governors, Bill Coffey and I want to thank him for his help in making the SPHL what it is today." The SPHL with long-term affiliates in Columbus, Fayetteville, Knoxville, and Huntsville, is also considering several applications for expansion teams that, along with the Cyclones' expected relocation, will ensure the SPHL remains the leader in Single "A" Hockey and entertainment for hockey fans in the southeastern United States.
