La Crosse, WI: The La Crosse Spartans want to be a top caliber franchise in their inaugural season in the Indoor Football League, and hope to establish a foundation that will entice the games top athletes to play in Wisconsin. Even though the team is in its infancy, it is already being billed as one of the top spots to play for elite talent. Today the team announced that they have signed the IFL's top scorer from last season in Running back Ulysses Odom. Odom was recently released from the Billings Outlaws, to the delight of the Spartans organization.
"Ulysses is a unique talent, with tremendous amount of skill and experience," stated Spartans Co-Owner and General Manager Chris Kokalis. "We couldn't be more thrilled to add him to our offense, and have all the confidence that he will pick up from where he left off last season in terms of production."
Odom, who last season played for the Lone Star Division Champion El Paso Generals, played in 11 contests in 2009 and averaged 15.5 points per game. His individual efforts helped the Generals advance to the Intense Conference Championship game and propelled the Generals to become the #1 ranked offense.
As a threat any time he touches the ball, Odom can hurt opposing defenses in a variety of ways. In 2009 he scored 28 touchdowns via the ground, 5 through the air, and 2 on returns. And with starting Quarterback Jimmy Sangster still sidelined with a knee injury, the team will rely on Odom to carry some of the load.
Odom and the rest of the La Crosse Spartans will look to even their record to 1-1 this Friday, March 19th against cross-state rivals the Green Bay Blizzard. The two met in an exhibition match back in February with the Blizzard winning on a last second field goal.
