La Crosse Spartans News Release
La Crosse, WI: After months of preparations, the La Crosse Spartans kicked off the 2010 Indoor Football League campaign last night in Wichita, Kansas against the defending Central Division Champion Wild. After keeping it close through the first quarter of play, the heralded Wild offense, led by 2009 All-IFL Team Wide Receiver Clinton Solomon, busted out in a big way and scored 29 second quarter points and never looked back. At games end the scoreboard read 57-20 with Wichita dealing the Spartans their first loss of the young season.
The game starting off promising for the expansion franchise in the opening minutes as Spartans Quarterback Jimmy Sangster found MacArthur White Jr. on the team's fourth play from scrimmage for a 15 yard touchdown pass. But the Wild answered right back with 27 yard touchdown pass of their own from Dixie Wooten to Solomon to take 7-6 lead. From there, the Spartans offense never regained momentum and could not find a consistent rhythm. A bad exchange on their next possesion led to a turnover, and eventually set up a Darius Fudge touchdown run. Wichita would not relinquish the lead from that moment forward.
To make matters worse, Sangster left the game in the second quarter with an apparent leg injury and did not return. He was replaced behind Center by Phillip Ditto. The injury occurred just as it appeared that Sngster was getting more comfortable in the pocket. He finished the night completing 11 of 17 passes for 136 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception.
The Spartans now have two straight bye weeks to prepare for their next contest on March 19th at the Green Bay Blizzard. The time off will prove to be invaluable to Coach Gilbert Brown and his staff as they assess their Quarterback situation, and make adjustments to their game plan. The team comes home on April 3rd for their first ever home contest against the Omaha Beef. Tickets are still available and can be purchased via the La Crosse Spartans website, www.lacrossespartans.com, or at the La Crosse Center box office.
