MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for August 15 through 21. Lefthander Stephen Gonsalves of the Chattanooga Lookouts was selected as Pitcher of the Week, while Jacksonville Suns third baseman Brian Anderson earned Player of the Week honors.
Chattanooga lefty Stephen Gonsalves was unhittable in his start on August 17, cruising to a Pitcher of the Week award. In a 6-3 victory over Montgomery, the San Diego, California native fired six shutout innings, while issuing just two walks. Using 66 of his 105 pitches for strikes, Gonsalves fanned nine Biscuits batters in the outing. Grabbing his sixth win of his Double-A career, the performance marked Gonsalves' third consecutive game without allowing an earned run.
Jacksonville third baseman Brian Anderson had a monster week at the plate on the way to his first career weekly award. The slugger from Edmond, Oklahoma hit .423 with seven runs, 11 hits, five extra-base hits, 22 total bases, two doubles, three homeruns, a walk and eight RBI, with a .444 on-base percentage, .846 slugging percentage and OPS of 1.291. Pacing his club to a 5-1 record last week, Anderson scored at least one run in all six contests and drove in a run in five. His biggest performance came in an 11-7 victory over Tennessee on August 18, going 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Three days later, in a 5-2 win over the Smokies on August 21, the University of Arkansas product capped his remarkable stretch with a run scored, a double, a homerun and two RBI.
