May 4, 2010 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL) News Release
LAKE CHARLES, LA (May 4, 2010) - This past weekend in the Southern Indoor Football League marked the only time in which the all the match-ups featured club s that faced off against from the previous season and it could have been witnessed with the large amount of hits along with the high quality play as both match-ups had tied ball games at the half, sparking this past weekend to be simply known as "Rivalry Weekend."
Formally known as the Mudbugs, the beginning of the 2010 season had been a long and difficult road home for the Lafayette Wildcatters. Things were looking bleak for a club that was starting out the season as the only winless team in the SIFL whereas their home debut was slated against their "I-10" rivals and defending champion, the Louisiana Swashbucklers.
In the series, the Wildcatters had been sort of the step-child to the Swashbucklers falling in all three meetings last year. In those three meetings, the Bucs managed to outscore the Catters 139 to 91 while rolling on their way to the inaugural SIFL championship.
But with a new name and venue to call home in the Cajun Dome, the Wildcatters finally broke through in front of 5.000 plus fans in attendance. The Catters and Bucs put on an "Instant Classic" with the pair administering a back and forth chess match featuring ten lead changes with a fifth period needed to settle to the score ending on 15-point come from behind 59-52 win for Lafayette.
The "I-10" series is sure to have a lot more left in the tank with the clubs scheduled to meet two more times with the next one lined up on June 5th and with a return to the Cajun Dome for the Swashbucklers.
Also taking place this weekend, the Greenville Force and Columbus Lions hooked up for the third time in less than a year with the first half was shaping up to be like the two meetings that took place last season. In the previous two meetings, Columbus managed to escape with victories in large part to big fourth quarter rallies.
Featuring a short drive up I-85, the Lions rolled into the Bi-LO center on the front end of a long road stretch for the entirety of May. Both clubs dueled to a 24-24 tie at halftime with the Force doing what they have done all season, utilizing the Webb to West and Idlette connection. Greenville quarterback Andrew Webb recorded 198 passing yards with receivers Isaac West and Willie Idlette accounting for over 75% of those yards.
But in the second half, the Columbus defense continued to chew up offenders holding the Force to just 58 passing yards in the closing half. The Lions defense collected three interceptions, two fumbles and five sacks on their way to pancaking Greenville 60-39 and becoming the leagues first team to leave with a road victory.
Much like the "I-10" series, Columbus and Greenville will have lots to say before this rivalry is over as these two clubs also meet two more times with the next meeting coming on May 15th with the Lions once again traveling to Greenville.
