Southern Hockey League Shaping Up
Published on June 2, 2004 under SPHL (SPHL) News Release
Asheville, NC: The newly formed Southern Hockey League held its first annual meeting May 25th thru 27th at Asheville, NC. , and began setting the format for league play which will begin in October.
Among significant rules the leagues board of governors adopted was to eliminate the center red line for neutral zone passes, thus allowing for passes from inside a team's defensive zone to the opposite team's blue line without a stoppage in play. The league also adopted a three on three overtime format for five minutes. If a team wins in the overtime, it will receive two points in the league standings, and the losing team will not receive any points. If the game remains tied after the five minute overtime, it will be decided in a three player shootout. The winning team in a shootout will receive two points in the standings and the losing team in a shootout will receive one point in the standings in a column designated Shootout Loss (SOL).
The board of governors also approved an 18-player roster (two goaltenders and 16 skaters) and a 60 game schedule. The season is scheduled to begin in mid to late October.
The SHL currently features teams in Asheville, NC; Huntsville Al; Jacksonville, Fl; Lakeland, Fl; Macon, Ga; Orlando, Fl; and Winston-Salem, NC. Plans are for the SHL to begin the 2004-2005 seasons with 8 to 10 teams.
