 Texas Fuel News Release
With all the talk about having a new minor-league basketball team in San Antonio, we think this is a great start for them. The new expansion team in San Antonio finally had the chance to put the hard work to the test against a very physical and hard-working ARMY team. "I put this team together for the fans and the youth of San Antonio. We only want to bring families back together in the gym. Our games are affordable and we are trying to put together a strong team, that this city can be proud of."said owner and head coach Benjamin Mireles. The South Texas Showboats showed great balance and fought through a very physical game. "There were a lot of fouls called in this game and they really didn't let the guys play. I was very disappointed in our free throw shooting tonight." said training coach Minifee. The team shot 51% from the field and 43% from the 3 point line but shot very poorly at the free throw line at 48%. This teams style of play depends on all around defense and running consistently and that is exactly what they did by running away with a win over the ARMY 101-70. The Showboats were up by 15 at halftime 44-29. They came in the second half and did not keep up the same energy as they did in the first allowing 41 points in the second half. They were still able to push through for the win. The Showboats also had a tough time with their only big man(Jason McNeil) out for most of the game with 4 fouls in the first 12 minutes of the game. Guys like James Ellison, and Glen Croom came up off the bench with 14 rebounds combined on the defensive end to help out with the absence of the big guy. "We had to come in and produce. That is our job and that is what we have to do here and play our role." said Ellison.
Players of the game: ( 4 Former San Antonio H.S. Athletes) Chris Woods(Fox Tech H.S) 18 points / 8 rebounds, Kenny Wilson(John Jay H.S) 24 points(on 9-15), Langston Grady(John Jay H.S) 14 points / 9 rebounds and Jamar Chatman(Madison H.S) 14 points. "All the players came out to play tonight but our style of play consist of a defensive minded team. We lost our momentum during the game when we had some of our other players on the floor. I was really disappointed that I did not have the same energy on the floor all night. So in reality, we didn't do our job as a team." said head coach and owner Ben Mireles. There will be more games to come as the Showboats play against the Airforce Saturday Oct 11, 2008 at Lackland Airforce in San Antonio, TX.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
