August 31, 2008 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Seattle Sounders News Release
(San Jose, CA) - The Seattle Sounders enter the final month of their existence in the United Soccer Leagues with a trip to San Jose to take on the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer, Tuesday, September 2. Kick off at Buck Shaw Stadium is set for 7:00 pm PT.
In the middle of a two week break from USL-1 league play, the game in San Jose is the Sounders third exhibition match in less than a week. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Seattle squared off against local colleges Seattle University and the University of Washington winning both, 3-0 and 1-0 respectively.
Sounders guest player Chris Sanders scored twice and Kevin Forrest added one in the 3-0 win over Seattle University while Sebastien Le Toux scored the winner over the University of Washington in the 63rd minute.
The Sounders won their last league match 4-3, August 24 against the Carolina RailHawks. Josh Gardner scored twice and Roger Levesque tallied his first goal of the season before Sebastien Le Toux put in the winner in the 65th minute.
The win put the Sounders firmly in control of fifth place in the USL table with 36 points and four games left to play, all at home. Right on their tail is the Montreal Impact (34 points) and the Atlanta Silverbacks (32 points). The top seven teams qualify for the USL-1 playoffs.
As for the Sounders Major League opponent, San Jose has come on strong in the last two months after spending the first half of their first season back in Major League Soccer in the cellar of the Western Conference. The Earthquakes have not lost since July 5 (3-0-4) and have won three of their last four including a 4-0 drubbing of the New England Revolution on August 16.
In their last game San Jose knocked off the Kansas City Wizards 2-1 at home to catapult themselves out of last place in the Western Conference for the first time this season. Darren Huckerby scored the deciding goal in the 84th minute after Davy Arnaud had equalized for Kansas City in the 64th.
The Sounders return to league play Saturday, September 6 against the Miami FC Blues. Kickoff at Starfire is set for 7:00 pm PT. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com.
