(Seattle, WA) â The Seattle Sounders, coming off a 23-4-1 regular season, saw many of their own peppered throughout the final list of A-League regular season statistical leaders.
Forward Brian Ching's name was found near the top of several different categories. He finished second in the league in scoring with 16 goals, eight assists (40 points). The Hawaiian native was 2nd in the goal scoring category with 16 goals, tied for 4th in assists with eight and tied for 3rd in most shots with 74.
Captain Leighton O'Brien finished 3rd in the league scoring race with 13 goals and 11 assists (37 points). His 13 goals were good for 3rd and his 11 assists led the league.
Darren Sawatzky finished 8th in the scoring race with nine goals and 10 assists. Midfielder's Viet Nguyen and Andrew Gregor found themselves in the top 20 in scoring finishing 17th and 20th respectively. Nguyen wrapped up the year with eight goals and seven assists while Gregor tallied nine goals and three assists.
Goalkeeper Preston Burpo did not want to be left out of the mix. He was 4th in the league in goals against average, racking up an impressive 1.00. He finished 6th in the league with six shutouts and was 1st in the league with 20 wins. The Sounders net minder was 6th in the league with 105 saves coming on 246 shots.
Scott Jenkins, a six-year Sounder veteran and defensive stalwart, was 8th in minutes played with 2,528. He is the Sounders all-time leader in minutes played, games played and games started.
"We certainly had some guys do some great things this year," said head coach Brian Schmetzer. He continued, "But right now, it's all about the playoffs...that's all that matters to my guys."
The Sounders await the winner of the Portland/Vancouver series that begins tonight in Portland. The first home playoff game for the Sounders is September 15th at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased by phoning 800 796.KICK.
