Soul sign AFL veteran defensive specialist Kevin Gaines

PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Soul acquired one of the Arena Football League's elite defensive specialists today as they have signed two-time AFL All-Arena Second-Team honoree Kevin Gaines. Gaines will begin his ninth season in the AFL. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Gaines (6'2", 210, Louisville) joins the Soul after spending the last three seasons with the Georgia Force. In 2005, he helped lead the Georgia Force to its first ArenaBowl appearance in team history. He finished the 2005 regular season with 73 total tackles, six interceptions including one for a touchdown, three pass breakups and one fumble recovery despite missing the last six games of the season. During the postseason, Gaines recorded 17 total tackles with five pass breakups and one interception.

"The addition of Kevin to our defense brings a veteran leader to our team," head coach Bret Munsey said. "He has proven to be one of the best cover guys in the League and we are expecting a lot out of him this year."

Gaines has earned All-Arena Second-Team honors the past two seasons (2004-05) and in 2003 he was the leader of the League's top ranked total defensive unit as he led them in tackles (52.5), pass breakups (10) and interceptions (9). He was also a member of the Orlando Predators' 1998 ArenaBowl XII championship team.

In his eight season career, he has accumulated 430 tackles, 35 interceptions, 80 pass breakups, seven fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles and five tackles for losses. He has also returned 17 kicks for 156 yards.
