Soul host Wings as fight for playoffs continues
January 30, 2013 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
Chicago Soul FC News Release
The Matchup
Thursday, January 31 vs. Wichita Wings - 7:00 p.m. (CST)
After a weekend on the road, the Chicago Soul (8-12) are ready to return home and host the Wichita Wings (6-12) on Thursday. The Soul, who last met with the Wings on Saturday in Wichita, came out on top 15-12 after jumping out to a 15-6 start and holding off a second-half Wings rally. The win helped the Soul further secure fourth place in MISL standings, allowing them to hold steady in playoff position. Chicago, who currently leads the series against Wichita 2-1, will try to remain in playoff contention by picking up another win over the Wings on Thursday night. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. CT at the Sears Centre Arena.
On the Radar
Carlos "Chile" Farias continues to keep his foot on the gas as he tries to help the Soul finish strong down the stretch of the regular season and attempts to lead his squad to the playoffs. Last Monday, Farias made history as he set a league record for 3-pointers in a single game, finishing with three. He also recorded a 2-point goal and a pair of assists to cap off his 13-point performance and lead the Soul to a 23-14 victory over the Wings. Farias racked up seven more points over the weekend against Wichita and Milwaukee to collect a total of 20 points in three games, landing him MISL Player of the Week honors. Farias currently sits in sixth place on the league leader board in scoring with 56 points, while Carlos Muñoz is right behind in seventh place with 51. Bato Radoncic is not too far behind with 42 points.
The Competition
Despite falling to sixth place in league standings after picking up losses to the Soul and the Milwaukee Wave last week, the Wings are still a team to look out for. In both of their last two contests, the Wings made impressive efforts at a late comeback, giving their opponents a scare.
Last Friday, Wichita recovered from a 10-2 deficit against Milwaukee after rallying with four goals in the fourth quarter and tying the game at 10-10. However, the Wave managed to score in the final minutes to hold the Wings off.
On Saturday, Wichita overcame another big deficit after trailing to Chicago 15-6 in the first half. The Wings were able to hold the Soul scoreless in the second half while firing three goals of their own to bring the game within three, but Wichita fell short of a rally once again and picked up their fourth straight loss. The Soul will expect another resilient performance from the Wings on Thursday as the two squads meet for the last time this season.
The Wings are currently led by Freddy Moojen (49 points), Geison Moura (39 points), Andrew Hoxie (36 points), and Tiguinho (28 points).
