Philadelphia Soul News Release
PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Soul dropped their fifth game in a row in front of a sell out crowd of 17,493 fans at the Wachovia Center to the Kansas City Brigade with a final score of 53-41.
Kansas City took advantage on the first drive of the game when Juston Wood was intercepted by Kenny McEntyre. Kansas City quarterback Raymond Philyaw took advantage of the Soul miscue and lead his team down the field to take an early 7-0 lead.
Philadelphia came back on the ensuing drive when Wood scampered 10 yards for a touchdown, but kicker Todd France was unable to convert on the extra point to trail 7-6.
Each team exchanged scores throughout the first half until late when Wood was picked off for the second time in the game. The Brigade scored on back-to-back drives and went into the locker room down 33-20.
The Soul started the second half strong on the defensive side of the ball and held Kansas City to a missed field goal. Philadelphia capitalized on the defensive stand and saw Wood connect with J.J. McKelvey on a 24-yard score to bring the Soul within six at 33-27.
As the defense continued to keep Philadelphia in the game, so did Kansas City's. Other than McKelvey's score, neither team was able to put any points on the board throughout the third quarter. Once the final quarter began, each team went back and forth and saw the Brigade finish the Soul's hopes of breaking their four game losing streak.
One of the brightest spots for the Soul was the performance from Ironman of the Game Charles Pauley. He finished the game breaking a franchise record with 277 all-purpose yards. He caught nine passes for 147 yards with two touchdowns to go along with seven kick returns for 130 yards.
Offensive Player of the Game Philyaw completed 36-of-41 passes for 364 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions. For the Soul, Wood finished the day completing 19-of-28 for 238 yards with five touchdowns through the air while running for another. He also fumbled the ball twice and threw two interceptions.
