Philadelphia Soul News Release

PHILADELPHIA (June 10, 2011)- This past Saturday, Soul Players and SOULMATES, along with Mayor Nutter, were at the Health Screening, hosted by the Athlete Health Organization, where approximately 1,000 high school athletes came out to get physicals free of charge.

"We're committed to cardiac health," said owner of Chickie's & Pete's and member of the Soul ownership group, Pete Ciarrocchi. "When I heard about the event I knew the Soul should be a part of it. We know how dangerous sports can be, so to get kids screened at a young age to make sure there are no unnecessary injuries or deaths while they play the sports they love is a very smart idea."

The Athlete Health Organization is a non-profit that offers health screenings and total sports physicals for high school athletes. Over 100 doctors from different disciplines, 400 volunteers from the major hospitals across the Delaware Valley, and various medical schools helped out at the Liacouroras Center and performed physicals for these students, which are required for participation in city school sports. Every student had an EKG, along with an Echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) if needed.

"In general, with an event like this, we will find about 1 in 330 children who have an abnormality that could lead to sudden cardiac death," said Dr. David Shipon, a non-invasive cardiologist from The Heart Center of Philadelphia PC and CEO of the Athlete Health Organization. "In this screening we found children with such abnormalities, and hopefully saved their lives and prevented unnecessary deaths by screening them at an early age."

Athlete Health Organization usually hosts one massive screening per year. As support for this organization grows, however, more screenings may take place in the Philadelphia area. Throughout the year, more screenings may also be hosted by Simons Fund, where Athlete Health Organization will provide the total sports physicals and Simons Fund will provide the heart screening.
