Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
JUPITER, Fla. -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs grabbed an early lead, but the Palm Beach Cardinals bounced back to take a 3-1 victory on Wednesday at Roger Dean Stadium.
Richard Castillo (3-3) defeated Alex Koronis for the second consecutive start, notching his third winning decision in a row. The right-handers previously faced off at Charlotte Sports Park on August 5. The loss also marked the end of Charlotte's season-high five-game road winning streak.
After Charlotte plated a first inning run on three hits, Castillo settled in to work 7 2/3 innings and allowed just two hits the rest of the way. He struck out five while walking one batter.
Using a revamped lineup after everyday shortstop and leadoff man Hak-Ju Lee was promoted to Double-A Montgomery, the Stone Crabs got two hits apiece from Ty Morrison and Reid Fronk at the top of the order. Mark Thomas drove in the lone Charlotte run with a first inning single.
Trailing 1-0, Palm Beach used a pair of solo home runs to tie and move ahead in the game. Greg Garcia belted a game-tying shot in the bottom of the first, while Edgar Lara's blast off the batter's eye in center put the Cards ahead to stay.
Niko Vasquez added some insurance with an RBI-double in the fourth to make it a 3-1 game.
Koronis (7-7) worked 5 2/3 innings in taking the loss. He allowed three earned runs on six hits, walking two and striking out five.
Cardinals reliever Keith Butler came on to record his seventh save in as many tries by getting the final four outs.
The series concludes on Thursday as the Stone Crabs send right-hander Jake Thompson (4-5) to the mound against a pitcher yet to be determined for the Cardinals. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
